A Brief History of College:

It was in November 1981 that Mahatma Gandhi College was established at Lalpur, Purulia. From the date of foundation it is absolutely clear that the college is reasonable a new one. But what began as a tiny seed grew onto a reasonably moderate tree sheltering now more than 150 students in its various department. It was in recognitions of a sustained endeavour of a number of education loving people which ultimately transformed tottering child into a resolute youth, striding forward to a new horizon of attainments, that on November 25th 2006, teachers, students, local enthusiasts, the district administration assembled to observe with considerable razz-ma-tazz the Silver Jubilee celebration of that cherished youth namely Mahatma Gandhi College.


Our Objective :

The primary objective of the founders of this college is to provide a scope & opportunity of higher education to the people of this locality specially amongst the women and who are economically weak and are not in a position to send their wards to a distant college. Thus the vision & mission of our institution has already been set by them.

Affiliation and Registration:

It is a non-govt. under graduate college and affiliated to Sidho Kanho Birsha University, Purulia with effect from 06.01.2011, vide G.O. No. 06-Edn(U) dtd. 05.01.2011 It got its registration under 2(f) & 12B from the UGC in the year 1990.



The College is proud to be associated with extension activities under the U.G.C scheme. Regular Literacy classes are held in two of the adopted villages by the volunteers of N.S.S. units.
We are in constant endeavours to link our institution to the community by engaging ourselves and the students in running literacy programme, organizing seminers on general social matters, blood donation camps, thereby helping the students it acquaint themselves with the society.
The College is also planning to organise seminars on different subjects for the benefit of the students and teachers.
A few aspects of our achievement need to be separately highlighted. The college authority constantly keeps in mind the urgency to up lift the aptitude level of both the teachers and the students. The creation of a large seminar hall has facilitated every one with the opportunity to uplift the information level and consciousness level of all through seminars.
